Meet Chucky....

This is Chucky...the inexperienced woodchuck. He tried to pretend to be a rock when he saw me approaching. He hung around for some time trying to "blend" with the ground and then a stone wall.

Baby Robins....all grown up in just two weeks!

I could not believe my eyes when checking to see how the babies were doing this past weekend! I found all but one had flown away. This straggler flew out minutes after this photo was taken thanks to a lot of coaxing from the mom. The family of Robins hung around the house for a few days but have now moved on, along with the baby sparrows and phoebes.

It's almost that time of year when the Box Turtles come out of the woods to lay their eggs. After several weeks of searching the forest floor for them I've decided to post a few photos from previous years. Maybe this will bring me luck....I know they're out there!

Saturday began with a fabulous blue sky and those nice puffy clouds but in the afternoon Killingly was on the very edge of a thunder storm. The uncertain weather put a damper on the nature walk but the rapidly changing light made for some interesting photography. The camera shy little chipmunk was the highlight!

The hummingbirds have returned!

Spring has officially arrived here in Killingly! Earlier this morning we spotted the first hummingbird peering in the living room window. After an exhausting flight from the Yucatan Peninsula or some other exotic winter vacation spot they're probably wondering why we don't have the courtesy to have a cold drink waiting. In spite of our thoughtless behavior they stuck around flying back and forth from the tree line with little bunches of fuzzy dandelion like seeds in their mouths. Spring nest construction is under way. They're still a little camera shy but with a little patience I managed a few shots. This one is the male already staking out his territory. Contrary to their cute and fuzzy appearance, these little guys are ferocious.
